Originally formed in 1934, Thurmaston was a Scout Drum & Bugle Band.
Disbanding due to World War 2 the band reformed in 1947. Guides joined in the 1970’s and the instrumentation changed to brass and woodwind to allow for a larger variety of music.
Membership encompasses most of the sections across the Scout & Guide movements. Continued recruitment is essential to secure the successful continuation of the band. Following a recruitment campaign new recruits join in May. The Band Trainees follow a training programme and are taught the basics of banding for an hour per week for ten months. After graduating as Junior Bandsmen they can then perform alongside the Senior Band members. Tonight the Junior Bandsmen are performing alongside the Senior Bandsmen.
Thurmaston is a traditional military style band and is an active member of the Traditional Youth Marching Bands Association (TYMBA). Each year the band takes part in marching band competitions run by TYMBA. Last year Thurmaston fielded both a Junior Band and a Senior Band and will be doing so again this year.
The band performs at a variety of events. These include Carnivals, Ceremonial functions, the Polar Bears Association Liberation commemorations in Belgium, the Birmingham International Tattoo, London Lord Mayors Show, fund raising and charity galas as well as supporting Scout and Guide events throughout the County and midlands.
